AUSTIN – Texas oil and natural gas companies added 4,800 upstream jobs* in June, marking the 19th consecutive month of job growth, according to data from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). Texas has recovered 42% of jobs lost between the high point in employment in December 2014 and the low point in September 2016. Since the low point, employment in the Texas upstream sector has grown by 48,400 jobs, which pay among the highest wages in Texas. For the six months of calendar 2018, monthly job gains have averaged 3,800. For the same six months last year, job gains averaged 2,700 jobs per month.
“Oil and natural gas upstream jobs are growing alongside massive industry investment and unprecedented production in Texas,” said Todd Staples, president of the Texas Oil & Gas Association. “This increased job growth and investment benefits all Texans by helping to fuel our state’s economy and contribute to our nation’s energy security.”
*Upstream activity includes oil and natural gas extraction and support activities for mining and excludes other industry sectors such as refining, petrochemicals, fuels wholesaling, oilfield equipment manufacturing, pipelines, and gas utilities.
